Discover About Responsible Ownership Of Airsoft Guns

By Anthony Carter

It is partly down to the realism of airsoft guns that make them so popular. And whilst designed very much for the leisure industry, they have still found favor with many state and federal authorities for training purposes; which simply adds to the appeal for many people.

The main difference to the real cousins is of course to be found in the firing mechanisms, which does not rely on an explosive action. Whilst there are many weapons that can be driven automatically, many still rely on manual intervention. The choice over which design is chosen is down to personal preference really, though compressed gas firing seems to be more popular than spring loads or electrically charged devices.

Whilst the lower end velocity, (at about thirty meters per second), are not likely to cause much harm, the plasticized six millimeter pellets can be fired at double the speed.

Whilst airsoft guns are not genuine weapons, they can still of course be dangerous; particularly in irresponsible or young hands. It is important to understand that they are not a toy, and should be used after training and with appropriate guidance and supervision at all times.

This is particularly so because of their realism and, whilst no laws currently exist to control their possession, there are laws controlling their discharge as with any ordinances within city limits. However, enthusiasts are perfectly able to step outside city limits and discharge them.

The realism of airsoft guns are controlled by federal mandate; requiring the inclusion of a bright orange or yellow cap at the muzzle. However, many people take it upon themselves to remove this, to ensure the realism is maintained

It is with such modifications that the problems arise however and, in some cases, has lead to lethal consequences. Both the law enforcement agencies and, more importantly in many respects, the public at large are forced into a situation where they see an airsoft weapon and deem it to be real.

Whilst leaving the bright indicating device is sensible, there are other ways to ensure your ownership of airsoft guns remains responsible and fun.

It should really go without saying, but there is no harm in mentioning that pointing airsoft guns at those unaware of the weapon's status is not to be done. People will react negatively; quite understandingly to such an event and it could have devastating consequences.

This is certainly true in those states where it is a felony centering on the "victim's" perception of the weapon and its potential to cause harm; no matter the truth of the weapon's nature.

Even if you point the weapon at someone who does know what it is, it is still important that protective clothing is worn. Whilst relatively low powered, the higher velocity weapons can still cause significant damage; particularly to soft tissue such as the eyes.

Carrying airsoft guns around, particularly in public areas should also not be done. Again people are unlikely to understand they are, in most cases, safe. However, if for some reason you are instructed to put down your weapon; particularly by officers of the law, this should be undertaken immediately. You will have a chance to explain, that explanation may be harder if you are disabled. - 30320
